Abstract

Many countries attempt to reduce the role of incarceration in their crime control policies, as prison is both costly and often perceived as ineffective in preventing recidivism. In this article, we offer a review of recent international research on this issue, with a focus on experimental and quasi experimental research designs. Second, we apply those methods on French data to evaluate the effects of electronic monitoring (as a full substitute to short incarceration), which slowly became the main alternative sentence in France since its implementation in 2000
