Pollution de l’eau au Mexique et risques environnementaux

Abstract

This article looks at population risk perception due to an environmental change, in Mexico, at the level of the municipality. Through an econometric analysis of panel data for the period 2000-2011, health and bottled water spending are examined following the implementation of several incinerators in Mexico. Thanks to a double differences model, we study the relationship between the implementation of an incinerator and household?s preventive expenses in order to measure risk perception. Empirical results show households increase their bottled water spending even if health risk of drinking contaminated tap is close to zero. Household income and education levels play an important role in the demand for preventive spending.
