La prévention du tabagisme des adolescents français

Abstract

In this paper, we measure the impact of a number of information providers on youth smoking. Using French epidemiological data on the health and lifestyles of teenagers in secondary schools, we estimate a Box-Cox double-hurdle model of tobacco consumption, where the information variables are instrumented. We find little evidence of preventative effects of any information provider on youth smoking. Other results seem counterintuitive. For instance, school nurses and gynaecologists have a positive effect on both participation and addiction risk. We use the generalised residuals of our participation equations to show that, indeed, these information variables are correlated with smoking behaviour through unobservable heterogeneities. These latter are closely related to the risk-aversion and the intertemporal preferences of teenagers. Classification JEL : C24, D83, I12, I18
