Abstract

At the beginning of the 2000s, residential migrations lead to a spatial redistribution of population, opposing attractive areas on the south-west and in decline areas on the northeast regions. We want to explain these territorial dynamics in this article. Basing on the Carlino and Mills model [1987], we are exploring the relationship between residential mobility flows and local employment growth. We show that residential migration and employment are influencing one another, and specifically that the economic dynamics are depending on the location strategies of population. Furthermore, employment tends to agglomerate into urban areas whereas population is leaving the largest cities for suburban and rural places.
