Panem et circenses . Les rois finançaient-ils les spectacles sous l’Ancien Régime ?

Abstract

The Ancien Régime had not developed systematic financial support for art. However, the granting of privileges to certain institutions sustainably strengthened the links between politics and culture. From the Revolution to the present days, the subsequent developments of theses links are influenced by this period. Focusing on the example of the Paris Opera, this interview reveals how cultural production, at times disciplined, at others subversive, attracted the attention of the leaders and their opponent during this epoch.
