Abstract

Despite the fact that urban sprawl has been studied since the early twentieth century, and although its environmental consequences are well documented, its regulation is notoriously ineffective. The causes: the imprecision of the usual definitions, the focus of public and scientific debates on large metropolises and developed countries, and the issues linked to the social acceptance of those policies.
