Abstract

This paper analyzes the effect of corruption on happiness in countries in sub-Saharan Africa, taking into account the role of democracy. The results obtained by applying the generalized method of moments (GMM) to a panel of 36 such countries show that corruption has a negative and significant effect on the degree of happiness of individuals. The results also show that democracy mitigates the negative effect of corruption on happiness. In sum, anti-corruption policies in the public sector and the promotion of democracy in countries in this region are likely to boost people's well-being.
