Abstract

Driven by pressure from international organizations, the debate on the General Compensation Fund in Tunisia has resurfaced in recent years and tends to be reduced to the sole dimension of the budgetary cost of the subsidy. Admittedly, the problem of the public deficit cannot be neglected, but the debate should not be based exclusively on public finances. Otherwise, any analysis in terms of the cost of compensation must be placed in parallel with an analysis of the possible economic, social, and political consequences of its removal or moderation.
