Abstract

In Mali today, education is going through a series of crises with complex and varied contours. Among these crises, the vulnerability of young people on gold-panning sites appears to be a crucial issue. In this article, we wish to delve into the problem of the link between the presence of schoolchildren on these sites and school dropout. We aim to do so through research conducted in the town of Kéniéba, located in the west of the country, where children, although educated, drop out of school to do gold-related work instead. In particular, we wish to understand what factors are involved in keeping schoolchildren on gold-panning sites rather than regularly attending school.
