Abstract

This paper explores the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on service exports and imports in sub-Saharan African countries. The dynamic panel method, applied to thirty-four countries between 2005 and 2015, shows that FDI does not directly affect service exports, except when institutions are strong. In contrast, an increase in FDI significantly increases service imports. Hence, inward FDI is accompanied by a growing demand for imported services, which is subject to a threshold effect.
