Abstract

This paper analyzes the influence of oil resources on inequality in Chad between when oil exploitation began in 2003, and 2011. The results of the study show that inequality has increased at the national level. The Gini coefficient increased by 17 percent between 2003 and 2011. Breaking down the Gini coefficient into sub-groups shows that there has been an increase in inter-regional inequalities. Moreover, the econometric results suggest that a 1 percent increase in oil revenues has led to a 0.09 percent increase in inequality. This increase becomes more significant if the distribution of oil revenues coincides with political considerations.
