Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact that Vietnam?s integration into the global economy has had on the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. Opening up a country?s economy leads to the redeployment of activities within the national territory and subsequently generates internal migration dynamics that determine the nature and spread of the virus. A field survey in an emerging province of Vietnam (Haiphong) confirms the vulnerability of migrants to the risks of HIV/AIDS and reveals that the virus is likely to spread in the country through concentric zones, the core of which is made up of provinces that benefit from the globalization process and are surrounded by poor neighboring provinces.
