Abstract

Savings groups, a recent tool in the field of microfinance, are often presented as ?improved? rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs). The savings group model builds on regular members? contributions but, in contrast with ROSCAs, they turn savings into credits for members. However, based on fieldwork conducted in South Kivu, our article shows how, despite similar commitments to save in both models, the savings group model reduces one of the key appeals of ROSCAs: the commitment to save.
