Abstract

The main aim of the paper is to point out that capital account openness for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries would hinder its financial development. In contrast, the financial openness would be beneficial in the presence of the adequate institutional environment. We use an econometric panel model with non-overlapping data for the period 1984-2010 for 12 MENA countries to link financial development indicators to institutional ones, in order to calculate institutional thresholds.
