Abstract

Recent school-based surveys in Guinea show an increase in gross enrolment ratio in primary education and a reduction of gender gap. Though, inequalities are still high, between rural and urban areas or between socio economics groups. This paper explores the relationship between poverty, enclave and school enrolment through data obtained from household and community surveys conducted in 2004 in a rural area of Guinea (Maritim Guinea). Household choice of schooling depends on internal factors, like income or socio-economic level of the family or on external factors linked to supply of schools.
