Abstract

How could we explain that the Societé Coopérative d?Intérêt Collectif (public interest coops), set up by a recent law in 2001, did not turn out the way expected? Even though in France a lot of actors supported and asked for the constitution of a ?social enterprise?, only a hundred SCIC or so (among them 10% in the cultural sector) has emerged, five years after its creation. However, in the sole cultural field, one should have expected hundreds of projects that could theoretically fit in the SCIC frame. This paradox is the main topic of this paper. JEL codes: M13
