Abstract

The liberalization process initiated in India in the 1990s has been accompanied by a multitude of socio-economic and political changes. While these changes have resulted in an increase in the growth rate, the economic benefits have not occurred in the same way throughout the country and have fueled growing inequalities at the regional level. This paper proposes to study how these spatial inequalities in terms of labour organization have contributed to reshaping interregional migration. After having first identified a typology of labor markets, and then spatialized the main labour migration flows in the country, we show that spatial inequalities and the type of labour market in origin and destination states play an important role on the circulation of labour in India.
