Abstract

Control, by restricting autonomy, is generally seen as a brake on innovation. In franchise networks, this suggests that the franchisor should arbitrate between controlling its operations and network capacity to evolve and innovate. The findings of survey data collected from 106 outlets related to franchise networks in France provide support for the positive impact of behavioural, outcome and social control mechanisms on at least one of three types of innovation (product, process and administrative). Moreover, the results show that knowledge diffusion plays a mediating role in the relationship between different control mechanisms and these three forms of innovation. This paper makes a contribution to the understanding of how control influences innovation.
