THE IMPACT OF MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS (MNCs) ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIAN ECONOMY

Abstract

The study investigates the impact of multinational corporations MNCs on sustainable development of Nigerian economy. The activities of the Shell B.P Petroleum Corporation which is one of the major oil producing multinational corporations operating in the country was investigated with a view to detect whether these multinational corporations MNCs are a force for developmental sustainability in the country. Two methods of analysis were used to analyze the data got both from primary and secondary sources. These include simple percentages and chisquare for data from primary source and multiple regression for data from secondary source. The results of the analysis imply that, although the MNCs have the potential to contribute to sustainable development, but their actual environmental activities impact negatively to the economy. Thus to turn the MNCs to a more positive force for sustainable development government of Nigeria should regulate their activities.
