BEZPROSTREDNÝ BRITSKÝ A FRANCÚZSKY OHLAS ZNÁRODNENIA SUEZSKÉHO PRIEPLAVU II. časť

Abstract

Po znárodnení Suezského prieplavu Británia a Francúzsko nervóznym spôsobom. Tlač začala vydávať bojové pokriky a politici hrozili inváziou do Egypta. Egyptskí predstavitelia si uvedomovali, že Británia a Francúzsko hľadajú spôsoby na politické ospravedlnenie na útok a zvrhnutie ich režimu. Na Západe pochybovali o tom, že Egypťania majú dostatočné technické a organizačné schopnosti na zvládnutie prevádzky v prieplave. Ani Británia, ani Francúzsko však neboli schopné zaútočiť na Egypt okamžite a ovládnuť prieplav a americký prezident Dwight Eisenhower, počas kampane za opätovné zvolenie tvrdil, že USA sa nepripoja ani nepodporia žiadnu vojenskú akciu bez schválenia kongresu. Vyzýval na diplomatické riešenie a vyslal Johna Fostera Dullesa, ministra zahraničných vecí do Londýna, aby upokojil situáciu. Americká administratíva dala jasne najavo, že dáva prednosť mierovému urovnaniu suezského sporu. Základom amerického postoja bolo, že vojna by znamenala katastrofu pre záujmy Západu v Ázii a v Afrike.
