Abstract

A dramatic managerial crisis occurring between 1955 and 1963 in the Abruzzo National Park stimulated the publication in 1968 of a reorganization plan by the environmental association Italia Nostra. The article illustrates the roots and evolution of the crisis, the origins and characteristics of the plan and how its guidelines anticipated many features of current sustainable tourism.
