Abstract

Based on the empirical evidence of secondary data, interviews, workshops and a web-based survey conducted in the Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region, this investigation identifies skill shortage as a critical issue in hotel management today. The authors indicate that most hotel administrations at present still can compensate staff shortage, whereas recruiting is the main problem. Especially due to the growing gap between the demands of young (potential) employees as well as trainees and specific business practices and dominant industry traditions, hotel managers are increasingly likely to face severe problems in near future. This includes not only failing to meet aims and objectives in staffing but also in maintaining service provision excellence and securing business success. Bridging the gap between hospitality companies and the aspirations of the so called ‘Generation Y’ is one of the key factors in a more sustainable approach to Human Resource Management.
