Abstract

Demographic change - especially the changing age structure - will have an influence on future tourism demand. This article shows the substantial influence of demographic change on tourism demand for holiday trips and short trips up to 2020 in Germany and the most important German source markets and makes subsequent deductions. These include an increase in overnight stays abroad and a decrease in domestic overnights due to demographic change. Furthermore, shifts between different age groups are to be expected, e.g. a growing importance of seniors and one-child-families as well as a constant or slightly increasing percentage of people with health impairment. Among other things, these changes would cause a decrease in seasonality and an increase in cultural, health and nature holidays. The importance of the Internet as an information and booking channel will continue to increase under the influence of demographic change.
