Abstract

Der Beitrag widmet sich den Erfahrungen und Selbstdeutungen arbeitender Kinder im Alter von 9-15 Jahren in einer deutschen Großstadt. Der qualitativen Untersuchung liegt ein offener Arbeitsbegriff zugrunde, der bezahlte und unbezahlte Arbeit umfasst. Den Kindern ist vor allem wichtig, bei der Arbeit selbstständig handeln zu können und Anerkennung zu finden. Eine bevorzugte, wenn auch nicht ausschließliche Form der Anerkennung sehen sie in der angemessenen Bezahlung. Die eigene Arbeit wird von den Kindern umso ernster genommen, je eher sie erlaubt, die eigenen Kompetenzen einzubringen, je deutlicher ihr konkreter Nutzen für andere ist, und je mehr sie von den Erwachsenen im sozialen Umfeld gewürdigt wird. Sie wird nicht in Konkurrenz zur Schule gesehen, sondern als zusätzliche Möglichkeit, neue Erfahrungen zu machen und den eigenen Handlungsraum zu erweitern. Die eigene Arbeitserfahrung kann zu einem wichtigen Baustein der partizipativen Autonomie der Kinder werden und dazu beitragen, ihren sozialen Status zu stärken und ihre aktive Mitwirkung in der Gesellschaft zu fordern.
