Abstract

Prediction and prophecy. With the help of a number of mythological and scriptural examples the requirements are sketched, which a scientific prediction should meet. These requirements are: (A) unambiguity, that is to say it must be as clear as possible under which observable circumstances the prediction is fulfilled and under which it is disproved; (B) the prediction must rest on information consisting of preliminary observations; (C) the accuracy of the prediction must be stated by the magnitude of the so‐called prediction interval and (D) the reliability, i.e. the probability that the prediction will be fulfilled, must be mentioned.
