Does weather influence COVID‐19 transmission?

Abstract

Three months after the first reported case of COVID‐19, it was declared a pandemic and many countries implemented full or partial lockdowns to protect human lives. The net economic impacts of such policies are still unclear, but with the warm season approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, weather may play a key role in helping governments to define better recovery strategies. Using a global cross‐region panel of daily data on 416 regions and 93 days, with multiple fixed effects, we explore the exogenous variations of weather variables to find that temperature reduces COVID‐19 transmission up to 8.98%. These effects are stronger in cold, arid and dry climates, diminishing propagation by 12.86%, 12.08% and 10.08%, respectively. Still, it is not clear whether climatic conditions can alone stop or slow the outbreak, but they should be included in models to predict future cases of the disease. Los efectos económicos netos de esas políticas aún no están claros, pero con la llegada de la estación cálida en el hemisferio norte, el clima puede desempeñar un papel fundamental para ayudar a los gobiernos a definir mejores estrategias de recuperación. Se utilizó un panel transregional global de datos diarios de 416 regiones y 93 días, con múltiples efectos fijos, para explorar las variaciones exógenas de las variables meteorológicas y se encontró que la temperatura reduce la transmisión de COVID‐19 hasta un 8,98%. Estos efectos son más fuertes en climas fríos, áridos y secos, donde la propagación disminuyó en un 12,86%, 12,08% y 10,08%, respectivamente. No obstante, no queda claro si las condiciones climáticas pueden por sí solas detener o ralentizar el brote, pero sí deberían incluirse en los modelos para predecir futuros casos de la enfermedad. 新型コロナウイルス感染症 (COVID‐19)の最初の症例の報告から3か月後、パンデミックであることが宣言され、多くの国は人命を守るために、完全または部分的なロックダウンを実施した。この政策が経済に及ぼした実質的な影響はまだ明らかになっていないが、北半球では温暖期を迎えることもあり、各国政府がより良い回復戦略を策定する上で、気候が重要な役割を果たす可能性がある。416の地域の93日間の毎日のデータのグローバル地域横断パネルと、複数の固定効果を用いて、気象変数の外生的なバリエーションを探索し、COVID‐19の伝播は気温により最大で8.98%抑制されることを見出した。これらの影響は寒冷、乾燥、乾燥気候でより強く、伝播はそれぞれ12.86%、12.08%、10.08%減少する。気候条件だけでアウトブレイクを停止または遅延させることができるかどうかは依然不明であるが、COVID‐19の将来の症例を予測するモデルに含めるべきである。
