The State of Development Economics

Abstract

In recent years there has been considerable discussion as to the nature and scope of development economics as a subdiscipline with in economics. Appraisals/critiques have been written by several well-known development economists. This paper attempts a critique of these "critiques" in the light of the origin and growth of this area of enquiry. While finding some merit in the current criticisms, it tries to show that development economics can be provided with a new approach much better suited to contemporary developments in economic theory and reality. Any talk of its "demise" is, therefore, insufficiently grounded. Copyright 1987 by Blackwell Publishers Ltd and The Victoria University of Manchester
