Abstract

Some simple postulates concerning the division of labour in organisations are examined. A hierarchical structure is derived, and in particular a constant span of control is deduced from conditions of efficiency. The distribution of rank generates a distribution of income which in the simplest case is shown to be Paretian. Aggregation over organisations preserves this distribution.
