Abstract

A survey was conducted primarily to determine the number of boats requiring launching facilities at a lake and to determine answers to other boating questions. A BIBD as a subset of another BIBD gave usable information on the primary topic while obtaining supplementary information with a minimum cost and number of interviewers. The launching information contained in the BIBD was analysed to estimate the total number of boats launched in a day and the proportion of launchings in each of seven time periods during a day. Estimates were obtained from the usual BIBD analysis and also from an initial procedure, a fixed margins procedure, and an iterative least squares procedure where a multiplicative Poisson model was assumed. The fixed margins estimation procedure seems best and can effectively be obtained from the BMDP log linear model package.
