Abstract

This article presents estimates of female participation rates in the workforce from 1871 to 1971 in two Australian cities. Short‐term changes in participation between 1881 and 191I are analyzed. It is concluded that changing conditions of supply were an important determinant of changes in the participation rate during that time and suggested that supplementation of family income by unmarried daughters provides the key to this relationship. Finally an attempt is made to reconcile short‐term instability of the participation rate with longer term stability up to 1947 in terms of a widening in the range of employment opportunities for women at about the time of World War I.
