Abstract

The article systematizes the main features of the household, which made it possible to define it as one of the fundamental subjects of the modern market economy. The significant importance of the household in society determines scientific interest in it as a subject of research in many social science disciplines, among which, in addition to economics, demography, psychology, history, etc. should be highlighted. Representatives of various sciences pay attention to various aspects of household life, but their integral combination allows to present a comprehensive view of the directions of functional activity of this economic unit. Therefore, revealing the functions of the household, economic and non-economic areas of activity were distinguished. The first are represented by such types as consumption, entrepreneurial activity, supply of resources (labor, entrepreneurial abilities, financial capital, etc.), savings and investment. In turn, the second group includes reproductive function, psychological function, educational function and recreational function. In our opinion, a special place among the functional manifestations of the activity of a modern household is occupied by the formation and development of human capital, since its formation occurs at the expense of non-economic functions, but in the future it acquires the status of capital, the owner of which is the corresponding member of the household, and is actively used in today’s market relations. Economic and non-economic activities of the household are interconnected, since the successful implementation of some tasks should be defined as a basis for others. In general, the main goal of household functions is the maximum satisfaction of the material, spiritual and cultural needs of all household members. In recent years, Ukrainian households have found themselves in a difficult situation due to the spread of the coronavirus infection and military aggression by Russia, which requires them not only to adapt their activities to new economic conditions, but also to intensify efforts to obtain the necessary resources for continued functioning.
