La incorporación del renminbi en los derechos especiales de giro. Implicaciones técnicas y económicas

Abstract

En octubre de 2016, después de un largo y controvertido proceso de revisión, el FMI incorporó el renminbi en la cesta de los derechos especiales de giro (DEG). Por una parte, esa incorporación supone un espaldarazo desde los foros multilaterales al proceso de liberalización financiera emprendido por las autoridades chinas en los últimos años. Para el FMI, por su parte, es un paso más en el proceso de reforma que la institución inició en la década anterior, con objeto de dar un mayor protagonismo en su gobernanza a las economías emergentes. Este artículo explica las principales características de los DEG, repasa el proceso que se ha seguido para la inclusión del renminbi en la cesta, y examina las implicaciones que puede tener para China, el FMI y el sistema monetario internacional (SMI) en su conjunto. Además, comenta las vías que existen para potenciar el papel de los DEG en el sistema financiero internacional, si bien la condición más importante para ello es el apoyo decidido de las instituciones y de la comunidad internacional.
