A Critical Discourse Analysis of Online News Reports on the Withdrawal of US Troops from Afghanistan

Abstract

The current study attempts to explore the online news reports by China Daily on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021 in an effort to finding out any significant representation of the chosen event. Based on van Dijk’s theory of news discourse analysis, this study analyses China Daily’s focused coverage on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan from April 2021 to September 2021and presents the discursive features of China Daily’s coverage of this event along with the media power hidden in the process of news discourse production.
