An Empirical Analysis of the Gold (Pawn) Shops Users in Italy

Abstract

The study analyzes the functioning of the pawn shop industry in Italy, paying attention to the case of Gold (pawn) shops or «Compro Oro». After an analysis of the supply side of the market, data from a recent survey were used to investigate the characteristics of the typical user of these shops. The main findings show that the chance to use a Compro Oro increases for who is under-30, female, low income and financially fragile. A lack of financial literacy is related with the use of that shops too
