Abstract

This paper aims to lay out why Europe-wide person-to-person payment may be attractive to end users and banks. It does not attempt to answer all questions in this regard (especially commercial and implementation-related), nor does it claim that this will be easy and all problems will be solved. It does, however, aim to shed some light on why, for strategic and business reasons, very many mobile peer-to-peer solutions are emerging from among banks and third parties, given that for many there does not seem to be an immediate business model. The paper then drills down into some of the important considerations in setting up a pan-European mapping service between proxy identifiers and accounts, which is considered to be a major challenge in making pan-European mobile payment a reality.
