Darwin Airport’s terminal expansion project

Abstract

Darwin’s airport has long played a part in the economic development of this northern Australian city, and the recent terminal expansion has provided the capacity to help the region continue to grow. The AUD75m project is the biggest undertaken by the airport operator since the current terminal opened in 1991, with the building almost doubling in size from 16,000 to 27,000 m2. Built while maintaining 24-hour operations, the extension threw up a number of challenges that make the on-time and on-budget completion of the project an even prouder achievement for Darwin International Airport. The bigger, more efficient terminal now offers visitors a better customer experience and will support our airline partners to build their businesses into the future — improvements that will benefit our local tourism industry and regional economy.
