The development of international air links by regional airports in New Zealand

Abstract

This paper explores the attempts by regional airports in New Zealand to develop international air links. The number of regional airports with international services has risen from none in 1994 to four in 2007, with several others actively seeking to establish international services. The paper traces the history of this growth and considers possible future developments, looking at the significant role that low-cost carriers have played to date. The authors examine the commercial pressures and other motivations for regional airports to encourage airlines to offer international services.
