Abstract

As a former Soviet state Moldova is located South Eastern Europe. Thirty years have passed since 1991, when it gained its independence. The national identity debates which started before independence continue today. In this study, the ideological approaches that affect the national identity building in Moldova have been examined. National identity building has been explained the nationalism. Nationalism is grouped under three headings as the primordialists, the modernists and the ethno-symbolists. The ideologies that influence the building of national identity in Moldova are named as pan-Romaniansts, pan-Moldovanists and Civil Moldovanists. Pan-Romanianists claim that the people living in Moldova are Romanians, close to the primordialists. Pan-Moldovanists claim that the Moldovan identity is a real identity and they are close to the ethno-symbolists. Civil Moldovanists, on the other hand, think that everyone has to meet in the Moldovan identity while respecting the sub-identities. They close to the modernists.
