La mortalità in Italia dall’Unità al covid-19

Abstract

The secular trend of epidemiological indicators well summarises the changes in the health standards of population. This paper illustrates the trends of crude mortality rate and infant mortality in Italy from the national unification (1861) to 2020. The declining trend of mortality was interrupted by some events, particularly by the cholera epidemics of 1867 and the influenza pandemic of 1918, when mortality peaked to 35 deaths per 1,000 people. In 2020, covid-19 pandemic increased the mortality rate to 12.5 deaths per 1,000 people in comparison to 10.6 of previous five years, corresponding to 100,526 excess deaths.
