A ubiquitous future m-Health system using wireless 3G technology in Bangladesh

Abstract

The study is conducted to investigate the feasibility of 3G technology for an m-Healthcare system. Besides, it attempts to address the aging problem that has become more severe every day. At first, a survey is taken by visiting 8 regional (upazila) hospitals and 6 union community clinics in different districts of Bangladesh to observe the real implementation of m-Health system and potential scenarios for technologies. Both remote monitoring and interactive service modes of m-Health system are examined. In addition, the interviews with patients who have already received services through 2G m-Health system are taken to discover any practical lack and limitation of current infrastructures. Next, a modified health infrastructure is proposed to use 3G at the remote side and Optical Fiber at the backbone side with a wide range of services, e.g. video conferencing through VoIP and Skype, MMS diagnostic reports, drug prescriptions and mobile purchase, home delivery, etc. Analysis shows that 3G requires a less transmission time at 4s for the upload and transmission of a medical image. Besides, the visual quality of interactive video is also better than existing 2.7G-based m-Health service, which may then be used for monitoring vital signals such as ECG signal, heart rate, bone fracture, etc., in the future. Then, the feasibility test indicates that huge initial costs and the poor ICT culture of healthcare professionals have raised a barrier for a new ubiquitous m-Health system. A difficulty faced by villagers to handle high technology devices comfortably has also triggered a barrier for a smooth running of the system.
