    Abstract

    A relação entre abertura comercial e crescimento econômico tem sido objeto de muitos estudos aplicados, mas ainda não há consenso sobre a existência e a direção da causalidade entre estas duas variáveis. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho é investigar a relação entre comércio externo e crescimento para um painel de dados para 18 países latino-americanos e um período de 51 anos. Para isso, aplica-se o teste de não-causalidade de Granger utilizando o modelo bivariado padrão e três especificações alternativas. Os resultados mostram que: em sete países ocorre uma relação de causalidade unidirectional do comércio para o crescimento; em três países a causalidade vai do crescimento para o comércio; em um país a causalidade ocorre nas duas direções; e em seis países não ocorre causalidade entre estas variáveis.
