Abstract

In this study, we try find out if there is a role of television on the people’s per- ception of the world and their characterization of the social reality. In other words, we investigate the television’s cultivation role. To investigate the television’s cultivation role, we use the components of Cultural Indicators Project of George Gerbner such as Cultivation Analysis and Message System. Analysis To investigate the television’s cultiva- tion role, first of all, we analyze the prime time news of high rated private channels of atv, Kanal D, Show and Star and public channel TRT1. Results of the news analysis indicate that there are too much violence scenes on the news. Then, we conduct a survey, which includes cultivation questions on employees of DDY. To understand if there is a cultivation role of television, we perform Cultivation and Mainstreaming Analysis. Based on the results these analyses, we conclude that there is an ideological cultural role of television.
