La pandemia de COVID-19 en 2020 en perspectiva histórica. Epidemias y crisis de mortalidad en los tres últimos siglos en Castilla y España

Abstract

Este artículo presenta la crisis epidémica de 2020 en nuestro país en relación con las principales alzas de la mortalidad registradas en Castilla y/o España entre 1700 y 2019 a partir de los libros sacramentales de 138 localidades castellanas, los censos de población y el Movimiento Natural de la Población de España, 1890-2019. Sus conclusiones son: a) en Castilla, la mortalidad catastrófica retrocedió abruptamente en la segunda mitad del siglo xviii, pero repuntó con gran vigor en 1800-1814; b) en dicha región solo se registraron cuatro grandes crisis de 1815 a 1869, pero su intensidad media superó a las del setecientos; c) entre 1870 y 2019 solo hubo en España tres años de crisis de mortalidad, 1918, 1938 y 1941, y d) la sobremortalidad en nuestro país en 2020, consecuencia de la pandemia actual, ha sido relativamente reducida en comparación a las registradas en Castilla o en España antes de esa fecha.
