La peste en España a mediados del siglo XVII (1647-1654).Medidas profilácticas y repercusiones comerciales

Abstract

En los años centrales del siglo xvii, coincidiendo con una crisis generalizada, se desencadenó una importante epidemia de peste bubónica en la costa mediterránea de la península ibérica. En este estudio se analiza su extensión, su cronología y, muy especialmente, las medidas tomadas por los agentes locales y por parte del Estado para su contención y posterior erradicación, así como la coyuntural parálisis que este episodio supuso para la actividad comercial en algunos lugares. Se muestra especial atención a los sistemas de control de la movilidad —tanto de personas como de mercancías— que coyunturalmente durante estos episodios agudos vinieron a implementar las medidas tomadas por los poderes regionales y a los cordones aduaneros de los territorios forales. Como resultado se observa una evolución dinámica en la que se entremezclan factores económicos, político-administrativos y asistenciales que, a pesar de sus limitaciones, favorecieron la contención de la peste en el arco mediterráneo evitando en buena medida su propagación por el interior peninsular.
