Abstract

The environmental function of olive groves can be modified by crop practices. In this sense, soil management practices are probably the most important ones, because of their influence over a worrying problem in agriculture: soil erosion. In addition, these practices can also modify the provision of other environmental public goods. This paper seeks to identify what are the most appropriate soil practices in olive growing to carry out a good environmental function. We use the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) in order to obtain a ranking of these practices through experts' priorities. The results show the positive environmental effect of the maintenance of spontaneous cover crops during winter, specially if they are controlled by mowering.
