Abstract

This study analyzes the evolution between 1990 and 2005 of real incomes of the agricultural work forces in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico. Using both officially-reported agricultural GDP and data on autonomous income from household surveys, the analysis investigates whether or not high sectoral GDP growth rates during the period translated into an effective increase in real incomes of the sector's workforce, distinguishing between salaried workers, the self-employed and employers. Two conclusions are notable: real agricultural income measured by the sector's GDP deflated by various inflation indices increased less than officially reported real GDP (i.e., using the implicit GDP deflator); and, salaried workers have captured a growing proportion of total agricultural workforce income since 1990, except in Colombia, where the total income share of the self-employed, a group including small farmers, has increased.
