Abstract

The aim of the research was determining the most important non-financial benefits and disadvantages resulting from the implementation of biometric technologies in cooperative banks operating in rural areas according to the managers of these banks. The subject of the study was 25 cooperative banks, including 19 cooperative banks with implemented finger vein technology and 6 cooperative banks with implemented palm vein technology. Interviews with representatives of cooperative banks were conducted in 2019-2022. It was established, among others, that the use of biometric technologies leads to an increase in the prestige and improvement of a bank in the quality and availability of services, which in turn affects the retention of existing customers and the acquisition of new ones. As the most important benefits from the implementation of biometrics, the managers of cooperative banks most often mentioned: greater customer satisfaction, no need to carry a card and remember PIN, increased transaction security, reduced operating costs related to card issuance, marketing benefits and the perception of a bank as innovative and modern, improved operational activity, faster service, increased the number of customers, in particular the youngest, who are generally interested in technological novelties and expanding the product offer of a bank. The disadvantages however were the increase in costs and the increase of the need for constant training of staff in the use of new technologies.
