Assessment of teak plantation among farmers in Ose local government area, Ondo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was carried out to assess teak plantation among farmers in Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to ascertain the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents, examine the level of teak production, level of profitability and the various challenges facing the respondents. Data were obtained from primary source from 90 farmers using a set of structured questionnaire with interview schedule. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Likert scale, profitability and regression analysis. The study revealed that 78.9% of the respondents were were male, middle aged (50%), married (87.8%), fairly educated and small holder farm size (73.3%). The study further revealed that lack of equipment and capital, market instability, drudgery and risk were the major challenges facing the farmers. Moreover, the findings showed that involvement of teak farming which determined the number of teak produced depend on cost of production, sex, age, marital status, household size and level of education of the respondents in the study area.
