Abstract

The current context of live cattle market is the most favorable of the last 20 years for the cow-calf sector. The calf is an important product of cow-calf operations but it is not the only one; it also produces heifers and fat or feeder cows, with the advantage that these cattle categories exhibit a quick liquidity anytime. The price relationship between calves and cows is essential for determining the proportion of each one in the portfolio of the producer. The required weaning rate for achieving the economic optimum is probably inferior to the one required for the technical optimum. For a successful increase of the reproductive indices of the national rodeo, producers need to visualize unequivocally the advantages of incorporating technologies with that objective otherwise, the effort will be worthless. It is necessary a correct quantification of the economic costs, estimating opportunity costs, in particular learning and other hidden costs associated with the adoption of the technology. This is a challenge.
