Abstract

----------------------------------- Secondary sources show that food consumption is one of the biggest consumption area with environmental impact which also directly defines the health of the individual. The purpose of this paper is to present and compare the theoretical knowledge of sustainable food consumption on the basis of various domestic and international researches and practice examples. Moreover, by means of benchmarking method, to show what kind of tools we can use in promoting sustainable food consumption. The analysis shows that there is a wide range of tools available to promote sustainable food consumption, the elements of which are, however, applied in different ways and extent. It can be seen, however, that education is one of the most effective tool for empowering individuals with the skills and competences needed to become a sustainable consumer. However, environmental education is only effective if it has a significant impact on the environmental consciousness and consumer habits of its participants. The purpose of the communication campaigns used by the governments of each countries is to stimulate the purchase of eco-friendly products.
